Migrant, who allegedly assaulted 10-yr-old Irish girl, is ‘fit for trial’, court hears

A 26-yr-old man accused of sexually assaulting a girl in west Dublin has been deemed capable of standing trial, the court has been told.

The individual charged in the case cannot be identified due to legal restrictions that apply to all sexual assault proceedings in Ireland, reports Breaking News.

He appeared before Cloverhill Courthouse via video link on Wednesday, with both the hearing and the man’s responses interpreted from Arabic.

However, Judge Alan Mitchell stated he had received a report from the defendant’s previous court date earlier this month indicating that “the accused appears to be fit to be tried”, reports Breaking News.

A Garda Sergeant informed the court that additional serious charges are being examined, though directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) have not yet been issued.

The man was ordered to remain in custody until December 17, when he is scheduled to reappear before the court, reports Breaking News.

Judge Mitchell noted that by that time the accused would have spent “close to two months in custody” and expressed hope there would be progress on determining the direction of the case.

The alleged assault involving the girl occurred on Garter Lane in Saggart on Monday, October 20th, reports Breaking News.

She had been under State care earlier the same day.

Following the alleged incident, violent unrest erupted in Saggart, resulting in injuries to four gardaí, the destruction of a Garda van by fire and more than 30 arrests, reports Breaking News.

Judge Mitchell acknowledged the “security issues” that have arisen in connection with the case.
