International protection applicants (IPAs) who were temporarily accommodated in Citywest last week will be permitted to continue their stay there during the ongoing cold weather, as stated by the Department of Integration, reports RTE.
This announcement follows the news that several new applicants received emails yesterday informing them that, since the cold spell had ended, they were required to vacate the facility by 10am this morning.
The Irish Refugee Council voiced their concerns regarding this decision, labeling it as “inappropriate and misguided,” especially since temperatures are still quite low, reports RTE.
However, it appears that this earlier decision has now been overturned.
A spokesperson from the department stated this afternoon that “during the weather warning period last week, new applicants were temporarily housed at Citywest and will continue to stay there amid the current cold temperatures.”
The spokesperson noted that their teams are managing an extremely limited availability of accommodation and are prioritizing families and individuals deemed vulnerable based on assessments. “We are closely monitoring the situation and will respond according to any additional weather warnings,” reports RTE.
Moreover, residents at the Crooksling IPAS center will remain in indoor accommodations on the site.
Residents from River Lodge will continue to stay at the former Central Mental Hospital site located in Dundrum, reports RTE.
