According to the government there were no showers or sanitary facilities on Mount Street in Dublin’s city centre, which is why applicants for international protection were relocated to alternate tented housing, reports RTE.
Outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was speaking following the relocation of hundreds of campers seeking international protection from central Dublin to alternative tented housing near Crooksling, County Dublin.
“The alternative in Crooksling had that (sanitary facilities and showers),” he said, reports RTE.
“It was to move them really for health and safety reasons,” Mr Varadkar added, reports RTE.
When questioned about the ongoing demonstrations at the Crooksling site, he responded as follows while speaking from Washington, DC: “The reason why it was chosen is because it’s State-owned and was available. Unfortunately there are protests and there’s risks everywhere. You’ll recall what happened on Sandwith Street, so unfortunately no matter where people are, there’s going to be certain risks but obviously security measures are put in place as well,” reports RTE.
