Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly defends Government’s decision not to introduce Level 5 restrictions sooner

The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has defended the Government’s decision not to introduce Level 5 restrictions sooner.

Speaking on RTE’s Claire Byrne Live, Minister Donnelly said the latest restrictions which will last 6 weeks are devised on a plan that could allow the country to open up once again in December.

When asked about the Government’s decision not to introduce the restrictions on October 4th, Donnelly said that the Government was going on previous advice which was given 72 hours earlier which suggested that the country remain on Level 2.

The Health Minister who said the introduction of the latest restrictions was the right approach, told the programme that if they were introduced two weeks ago the country wouldn’t have been ready for such a change.

He added that the epidemiological information at the time wasn’t the same as it is now.
