Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly says he hopes emergency legislation for Covid-19 restrictions doesn’t have to be extended beyond November

The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has said that he hopes that the Government doesn’t have to extend emergency legislation for Covid-19 restrictions beyond November 9th.

Speaking in the Seanad , Donnelly said that he hopes this is the last time he has to extend such a legislation that includes such draconian measures.

Donnelly said that the legislation is being extended a further five months in order to allow the Government to introduce public health measures if they are required to do so.

He went on to say that the Government has the option to extend the measures by a further three months to February 2022, but reiterated that he hopes that the powers wouldn’t be extended past November 9th.

The Health Minister added that it was important that public health measures are unwound in a sustainable way.
