The Minister for Health Simon Harris has revealed that he plans to introduce new legislation that will see self service cigarette machines banned.
In a tweet, the Health Minister revealed that he intends to bring forward legislation this September.
Under the new proposals, the Health Minister has called for a ban on the sale of tobacco products in children/family friendly places.
The proposed legislation will also call for a ban on the sale of e-cigarette products to anyone under the age of 18 as well as a new licencing system fód regulators selling e-cigarettes and related products.
In the tweet Harris said: “6,000 deaths a year are caused by smoking. Tobacco use costs Irish society a €10.7bn annually.”
“It remains one of the greatest challenges for public health. I am bringing forward a new law in Sept to ban sale of cigarettes from vending machine at locations aimed at children.”
