Minister for Justice: “Gardaí and Defence Forces are aware to any potential terrorist threats to Ireland”

The Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald has claimed that the gardaí and the Irish Defence Forces are very aware of any potential terrorist threats to Ireland.

Ms Fitzgerald also stated that Europol and Interpol criminal databases need to be properly ran if fellow nations are to effectively fight any potential terrorist attacks. Minister Fitzgerald has said that the gardaí and the Defence Forces are “very alert” of any threats to the state.

Ms Fitzgerald told reporters: “Be very sure that the Gardaí and the Defence Forces are very alert to this issue.” “Certainly the whole of Europe is concentrating on this issue and that includes us. We are involved with all the databases, the Interpol and Europol databases, but the databases themselves – as was emphasised again at the meeting on Friday – need more co-ordination.”

Ms Fitzgerald’s comments come after the European Parliament are considering introducing new laws that would allow police forces across the EU access to all flight, train and ferry travel details.
