Minister for State Niall Collins denies saying the lockdown will last for 6 weeks

The Minister for State Niall Collins has seemingly caused confusion whilst speaking about lockdown restrictions on RTE’s Prime Time Programme this evening.

Collins who was speaking about the Government’s intention to hold state examinations later this year has caused viewers to flock to social media after he inadvertently said that schools will be closed for six weeks following the surge in Covid-19 cases.

However when questioned by host Mark Coughlan, Collins said that he stated that schools would be closed for three weeks until the end of January.

The incident has led to many to take Twitter to question why Collins said six weeks rather than three weeks.

Although no official decision has been made in regards to lockdown restrictions, Collins said that the Government remains committed to holding the Leaving Certificate at its usual sitting and that every effort is being made to deliver that.
