Mixed reaction to Bob Geldof’s explanation as to why he handed back his Freedom of Dublin

There have been mixed reactions on social media to Bob Geldof’s appearance on last night’s Late Late Show.

Geldof spoke about how he didn’t want to be associated with Myanmar’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Geldof called the woman, who was given the Freedom of Dublin, nothing short of a “pig” after she it was discovered she was involved in the horrific rape of women in Burma and the pure evil of burning babies.

The Boomtown Rats musician also spoke about Ireland’s famine and how he doesn’t feel either proud or ashamed to be Irish – he just is Irish.

Having given back his Freedom of Dublin, the Sinn Fein council still hasn’t returned his plaque – but no doubt pressure is mounting that they’ll eventually have to.

Some social media users claimed he explained himself quite well and that he was right to do the gesture, while others said he was grandstanding and looking for attention.
