The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has called 1,500 people who arrived from Brazil to contact their GP and get a Covid-19 test.

Speaking on RTE’s This Week in Politics programme, Minister Donnelly said that there is concern over the Brazilian variant of the virus as well as a variant from South Africa.

Donnelly told the programme that anyone who has arrived from Brazil over the past 14 days are being asked to get a PCR test and self isolate for 14 days.

The Health Minister’s comments come the country has seen a recent spike in cases which has been partly attributed to the UK variant which was discovered over Christmas.

Donnelly”s plea has led to mixed reactions on social media with many questioning why the country’s airports are still allowing flights into the country.
