There have been many mixed reactions to the gardai obtaining water cannons from the PSNI.

Gardai have acquired water cannons for use in the event of further disorder or violent protests, reports RTE.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has secured two water cannons from the PSNI which are due to arrive in Dublin this evening.

In a statement, the PSNI said it had “dispatched two water cannons in response to a Mutual Aid request from An Garda Síochána. These will be solely operated by An Garda Síochána officers,” reports RTE.

Commissioner Harris also wrote to all police officers, assuring their support as they use their coercive powers to protect themselves and the public in a lawful and proportionate manner.

Yesterday’s street attacks on individual officers who did not draw batons or other weapons to protect themselves raised concerns.

Mr Harris said a significant number of rioters were trying to force their way through the crime scene cordon at Parnell Square East.

He added: “We’re going to have to have a fundamental review of our public order tactics, given the amount of violence”, reports RTE.
