Mixed reactions to High Court approving deal that sees Irish woman pay her family home mortgage until she is 90 years old

There has been a very mixed reaction to the prospect of an Irish woman paying off her mortgage until she hits 90 years young. Many are saying that it’s completely unfair, unjustified and ridiculous, while others say at least she’s guaranteed a roof over her head.

A Tipperary woman who applied to the High court for a Personal Insolvency Arrangement (PIA) will pay her mortgage on her family home until she is 90 years old.

54 year-old Esther Kirwan lives alone in a three bedroom bungalow valued at €145,000 in Thurles, Co Tipperary.

The woman has total debts of €108,000. €83,000 of the debt is owed to Start Mortgages in respect of her mortgage, reports Breakingnews.ie

The remaining €25,000 is owed to AIB for loans advanced to her former business and Revenue.

Should Ms Kirwan die before reaching 90, the balance of what is owed to Start will be paid from the proceeds of sale of her estate.
