Mixed reactions to Irish government agreeing to give €9 million to Ukraine but ONLY for non-lethal military funding

There has been a very mixed reaction to the Irish government giving close to €10 million in funding to the Ukraine but only as long a it’s used for non-lethal military.

Some people are saying that we should keep our neutrality intact while others say that they should be giving even more money to the Ukraine.

Ireland will not be funding weapons to Ukrainian soldiers, but will give €9m for non-lethal military funding.

The Irish Government will be giving Ukraine €9m to the non-lethal EU fund aiding Ukrainian forces. This will include helmets, medical equipment, blood and fuel reports RTE.

The Government decided to abstain from contributing to Ukrainian weapons due to their coalition commitments in the current Programme for Government.
Irish neutrality was not given as a reason for not providing weapons.

“In line with the commitment in the Programme for Government, Ireland will constructively abstain from the lethal equipment elements and will not contribute financially to this aspect,” a Department spokesperson.

It is expected that Austria and Malta will also take this funding approach whilst the EU has announced a programme to arm the Ukrainian army.
