It’s been one of the most contentious subjects over the past decade across the world let alone the Emerald Isle.
Ireland is reeling from the economic effects of the Covid-19 lockdown and thousands of Irish remain homeless, but the government has prioritised plans to lease 35 properties in Galway city centre to house asylum seekers.
Just days after the UK announced it would begin to evict thousands of bogus asylum seekers, here the Department of Justice announced will spend millions of the Irish taxpayer’s money to home 140 alleged asylum seekers in apartments and town houses in Galway city’s Dominick Street and Munster Avenue.
The lease of the properties will last for an initial two years but residents of Galway might be forgiven for suspecting this migrant planation will become a more or less a permanent fixture of their city and with the government failing to deport 80% of failed asylum seekers it is safe to assume the figure of 140 will also change.
RTE reports that the contract to lease the properties was signed with Keldesso Ltd.
