A new British one pound coin goes into circulation in today. It’s a completely new shape with 12 sides, with the round coin giving way to the new minted piece.
It has the symbols of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland around it and is considerably thinner, lighter and slightly bigger than the coin it replaces.
Britain’s finance ministry says there’s new technology with the bi-metallic substance and that the coins will be “the most secure of its kind in the world” which should prevent a rise in counterfeits.
