More madness: Parliament street to be made traffic-free from next week

Dublin City Council has revealed that Parliament Street in the heart of the city will become a traffic-free zone starting next Friday, July 4th, reports Breaking News.

To mark the transformation of the street, a market is set to take place on July 4th, followed by events scheduled for every weekend throughout July, beginning on July 5th.

Currently, the street is heavily used by pedestrians, with daily foot traffic reaching up to 23,000 people, reports Breaking News.

The plan aims to permanently convert the area into a space for pedestrians and cyclists, while also incorporating greenery and seating areas.

According to the council, the redesigned space will create an inviting pedestrian and cycle route running north-south between City Hall and Bolton Street by connecting with Capel Street. It will also link the eastern and western parts of Temple Bar, reports Breaking News.

In a consultation conducted in May 2025, 90 percent of those surveyed supported improving the public space and introducing two-way cycling.

The council stated that temporary upgrades—such as seating, greenery, and new surface materials—will begin on July 7th and continue over the summer months, reports Breaking News.

Traffic changes for the area are as follows:

Between Essex Quay and Essex Gate – this segment of Parliament Street will be permanently closed to vehicles, open only to pedestrians and cyclists. The street surface will also be raised to match the existing kerb level;
The current flow of traffic from west to east between Essex Gate and Essex Street East will stay open to all vehicles at all times;
The part of Parliament Street stretching from Essex Gate to Lord Edward Street will be traffic-free, although deliveries will be permitted between 6am and 11am each day;
Cyclists will be allowed to travel in both directions on Parliament Street;
A new two-way cycling route will be introduced on the eastern side of Grattan Bridge. Traffic lanes on the bridge will be reduced to a single lane for right turns only;
On the east side of Capel Street, a two-way cycle lane will be installed between the quays and Strand Street Little. In addition, cyclists will be able to travel north on Capel Street, completing a continuous two-way cycling corridor from Dame Street to Bolton Street.
