Ireland’s new coalition government have already provoked fierce criticism after Fine Gael’s Regina Doherty, who was rejected by her constituency in Meath East, losing her Dáil seat was appointed to the Seanad and made head of the Seanad, the upper house she fought so hard to abolish.
Doherty who had served as Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection in the previous Dáil had campaigned for the abolishment of the upper house of the Oireachtas in the 2013 referendum which was ultimately defeated.
The government is already profoundly unpopular with the new Taoiseach Micheál Martin being the most unpopular new head of government in the history of the state.
