More than 1,600 L-Drivers have had their cars seized for not having a full licence holder with them

Since new legislation was introduced by Minister for Transport Shane Ross in December, more than 1,600 L-Drivers have had their cars seized and gotten a big fine.

New garda figures released today show that 2,311 people have received penalty points and fines since the start of the year for not displaying L plates on their car.

According to RTE, the theory behind such disgraceful laws is that it will make more learner drivers sit their driving test.

The Road Safety Authority have said that there are now 41,316 people on their fourth or more learner permit for a car or B category licence – which is just a regular car licence.

Some 8,663 of those drivers are on their tenth or successive learner permit but many people think that it’s not fair to hit L-Drivers in their pocket.
