A driver who deliberately drove at a recently retired man in a petrol station forecourt, causing “catastrophic and life-altering harm”, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison.
Patrick McDonagh, aged 25, struck Michael Whitfield with his car more than four years ago, causing Mr Whitfield to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground, resulting in life-changing injuries, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard, reports Breaking News.
Mr Whitfield, now 66, was placed in an induced coma for five weeks following the collision and spent 10 months receiving treatment at Beaumont Hospital.
He later spent five months at the National Rehabilitation Hospital before being moved to a specialist brain injury care facility, where he remains a full-time resident. He requires constant care, is unable to walk and has difficulty speaking, reports Breaking News.
Aideen Collard BL, for the prosecution, told the court that the injured party had suffered from hydrocephalus as a child, which is considered to have restricted the extent of his recovery.
The court heard that despite his underlying medical condition, Mr Whitfield had lived a normal life, worked as a bookkeeper for four decades and had taken early retirement with plans to travel, reports Breaking News.
McDonagh, who lives at St Margaret’s Park in Ballymun, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm at Clonshaugh Road on 3 November 2021.
He had originally faced a charge of assault causing serious harm and a trial date had been fixed, but the Director of Public Prosecutions accepted a plea to the lesser charge, reports Breaking News.
At the time of the incident, McDonagh had no previous convictions, but he now has 17, including convictions for drug offences, road traffic matters and criminal damage.
In June 2025, he was sentenced to seven years at Tullamore Circuit Criminal Court for offences including false imprisonment, assault causing harm, threats to kill and burglary. The court heard these charges stemmed from an incident in February 2024 in which an elderly man was assaulted and robbed by McDonagh and three other men, reports Breaking News.
McDonagh’s earliest possible release date for that sentence is January 2031.
When sentencing McDonagh on Friday, Judge Elma Sheahan said that had he shown even a minimal level of care and consideration for Mr Whitfield, the incident could have been avoided, reports Breaking News.
“There is no explanation as to why he failed to exercise that modicum of care and consideration,” the judge said, noting the incident happened in “broad daylight” and that neither drink nor drugs were a factor.
She said the injuries inflicted on Mr Whitfield were at the most severe level, describing them as “catastrophic and life-altering”, reports Breaking News.
“His life as he knew it…is now over,” Judge Sheahan said.
She described the victim impact statement as “impressive, informative and very upsetting, all in equal measure”, reports Breaking News.
The judge imposed a headline sentence of six years, which she reduced to five years after considering mitigating factors. She ordered that the sentence run consecutively to the seven-year term McDonagh is already serving.
She suspended the final six months of the sentence on several conditions, including that McDonagh remain under Probation Service supervision during that period, reports Breaking News.
“Imposing this sentence, I am conscious that any sentence imposed can’t restore Whitfield to his previous good health,” she said, reports Breaking News.
Prosecution counsel told the court that the dangerous driving charge arose because McDonagh continued driving forward for several seconds at a slow speed without braking, despite the injured party being clearly visible to him, reports Breaking News.
