Road users are being urged to exercise extra caution this weekend as a Status Yellow wind warning is set to come into effect, reports RTE.
The warning has been extended and will remain in place until Sunday afternoon.
Met Éireann has predicted strong winds across Ireland with the arrival of Storm Dave.
Senior forecaster Gerry Murphy said the northwest is expected to experience the worst conditions, although windy weather will be felt across the country, particularly from early afternoon, reports RTE.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, he said counties Sligo, Donegal, Leitrim, along with Derry and Antrim, are “going to get some very strong winds through the evening”, reports RTE.
Mr Murphy added that while Storm Dave will also bring heavy rain, the rainfall levels “will not be quite as impactful” before clearing tomorrow night.
“The wind will be the major feature tomorrow and in addition to that, people need to be aware of waves as well.
“We will be in spring tides. We will have high tide during tomorrow afternoon, coupled with those very strong winds.
“There will be wave over-topping, possibly some localised flooding near coasts. So, people need to be very careful near the coast”, reports RTE.
Mr Murphy also advised all road users to be especially cautious when travelling over the weekend.
The Road Safety Authority said that strong crosswinds could affect vehicle control, with high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists particularly at risk, reports RTE.
It warned drivers to be alert for fallen debris, objects blown onto roads, and vehicles drifting across lanes.
It also advised motorists to leave extra space around vulnerable road users like cyclists and motorcyclists, who may be pushed off course by strong winds, reports RTE.
“Expect the unexpected”, the authority said in a statement, reports RTE.
The Met Office has also issued a Yellow wind warning for several counties in Northern Ireland, including Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry.
It said the storm is expected to bring a period of very strong winds from tomorrow into Easter Sunday morning, potentially causing damage and travel disruption, reports RTE.
Storm Dave is the fourth named storm of the season, from a list of 21 names selected by the Irish, UK, and Dutch weather services.
