Motorists could soon face on the spot fine for leaving their engine running near schools

Motorists could be soon hit with an on the spot fine if they leave their engines idling near schools.

The proposed new Bill which could be brought before the Dail is being submitted by The Social Democrats who say air pollution is a big problem and particularly an issue near schools.

Speaking to Newstalk, the party’s Spokesperson for Climate, Environment & Biodiversity Jennifer Whitmore said the issue of air pollution near schools needs to be taken seriously as exhaust fumes can be damaging to children.

Whitmore told Newstalk that the issue of idling near school gates is not getting enough attention as children who are developing are being exposed to harmful toxins.

The party who are propsing a €40 on the spot fine to be implemented say people don’t realise what harm they are doing by leaving their engine running whilst waiting outside the school gates.
