Motorists urged to take care across the Easter long weekend with blessing of the roads ceremony

Fr John Kenny, PP Partry-Tourmakeady, blesses the roads outside the Church of Partry

The roads in County Mayo will be blessed this week in what Mayo County Council describe as a “novel ceremony” aimed at reducing the number of people who die in traffic accidents each year.

The Road safety office of Mayo County Council  is once again joining forces with Various religious groups to promote the Blessing of the Roads campaign, focusing on working together to achieve the long-term vision of zero fatalities or serious injuries.
Mr Noel Gibbons road safety officer said this important campaign is a reminder that we should not accept that anyone should die or be seriously injured on our roads, some people may be  sceptical about this campaign but once people are discussing it that means road safety is in the their discussions”
“Easter is one of the peak holiday periods for road travel, so it is important to take time to think about road safety and the impact it can have on families, friends and communities.
“I’m urging our community to plan ahead, don’t drive tired or distracted to ensure we all have a happy and safe journey.
He added:
“The community makes improved road safety a goal in an effort to ensure that the grief associated with loss of life, or serious injury, does not come to them.”
“It is also important to recognise and thank our emergency services, local police and volunteers for helping to make our roads safer, Everyone who uses our roads needs to be responsible and play their own part in improving road safety,
We all need to take care, keep within the speed limits, wear seatbelts, never use mobile phones while driving and never drink and drive.Fr John Kenny said.”
