The much hated TV licence fee could be replaced by a new telecoms charge in the near future if a senior Fine Gael senator’s proposal is met with a positive response in the Dáil.
According to senator Catherine Noone the current system of paying for a TV licence is completely outdated and unnecessary and therefore it should be replaced by a less expensive fee.
Ms Noone who was speaking earlier today suggested that the state should seriously consider scrapping the current fees by replacing them with phone and broadband connection charges.
The Fine Gael senator claimed that the government would easily claim more revenue if the minimum €4 charge was introduced as the fees would be collected via phone and broadband companies.
