The heartbroken son of a man who died after being seriously attacked in a sustained attack  said he “hopes for justice” as his father “did not deserve to die that way”, reports The Mirror.

Marcel Kusenda, 47, was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon at Naas General Hospital from injuries sustained during the serious assault.

He had been in critical condition in hospital since he was discovered with serious injuries outside a house in the Piercetown area of Newbridge in Kildare on Wednesday morning.

An important line of inquiry is that Mr. Kusenda, originally from Slovakia, was attacked in an argument that originated from an incident in a house.

As the Garda investigation continues, Marcel’s grieving son, also named Marcel, has spoken of his immense grief for his father and his hopes for justice.

Speaking from his home in Slovakia, Marcel Jnr said: “It is very difficult and I don’t know what to do now. This hurts so much and my dad just didn’t deserve to die like this. Not in this terrible way,” reports The Mirror.

And in a tribute on social media, Marcel Jnr said he hoped his father “finds his peace”.

He wrote: “My daddy, rest in peace. Thank you for everything you have done for me. You gave me a lot of advice in life, you helped me a lot in everything you could. I hope you find your peace,” reports The Mirror.

Mr Kusenda received what sources say was a “very severe beating”, but investigators do not believe weapons were used in the attack. Gardai arrested a man in his thirties and was questioned at Newbridge Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

However, the Gardai suspect that several men were involved in the crash. A source said: “The case is likely to be upgraded to a murder investigation,” reports The Mirror.

An incident room has now been set up at Newbridge Garda station and an investigation is continuing under the direction of a senior investigating officer.

An autopsy will be performed and the results will determine which direction it takes.

However, it is believed the investigation will be upgraded to a homicide investigation.

Last night, the man in his 30s who was arrested as part of the inquest remained in custody at Newbridge Garda station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. In a statement yesterday, An Garda Siochana said: “The man, aged in his 40s, who was discovered with serious injuries at approximately 10.30am on Wednesday March 8, 2023 outside a residence in the Piercetown area of Newbridge, has been pronounced dead at Naas General Hospital. The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a postmortem examination will be arranged,” reports The Mirror.
