National reservoir swimming warning as the summer’s warm weather finally arrives

The ESB has warned of the risk of swimming in reservoirs ahead of the hot weather forecast for the June bank holiday weekend.

The energy company said its reservoirs are unsuitable for swimming “because of the risk of deep and fast-flowing waters, changing water levels and uneven ground,” reports RTE.

These waters include the ESB reservoirs at Poulaphouca in Co Wicklow, Golden Falls and Leixlip in Co Kildare, Inniscarra and Carrigadrohid in Co Cork, the Ardnacrusha headrace and tailrace canal in Co Clare and Assaroe, Lough Nacung and Lough Dunlewey in Co Donegal, reports RTE.

Met Éireann said the current fine spell will last through the weekend and the first week of June, with temperatures of 21-24°C forecast across the country, with temperatures as high as 25°C in parts of the west.

Yesterday the Irish Coastguard rescued two children in distress at sea in Mullaide, County Dublin.

A passing boat happened as an off-duty member of the Binh Eadhar coastguard team picked up the children, who were out of their depth while they were holding on to a buoy.

The Coast Guard also urged the population to be careful near the coast, reports RTE.
