A lot of youngsters seem to fancy a career in the army, as 4,807 people have applied for 75 officer cadet positions in the Irish Defence Forces, it emerged today.
Notably, the army has gone to considerable efforts to attract more female recruits. The figure of female applicants has increased from 748 in 2014 to 1,459 this year.
While in training, the recruits earn €20,000 and are provided with accommodation. This figure rises to €21,828 after graduating, but they are no longer given accommodation at that point.
