Netflix are facing a significant backlash and accusations of normalising paedophilia after it promoted one a French film titled “cuties” which features pre-pubescent girls learning to twerk in what is described as a “coming of age” drama.

So far tens of thousands of people have signed a petition demanding the film be taken down and Netflix has pulled artwork promoting the movie but, on the site, “Cuties” is now described as follows:

“Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.”

However, Metro UK reported that the original description of the film was somewhat more risqué reading:

“Amy, 11, becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family’s traditions.”

The film depicts 11-year-old girls dressed in revealing outfits and dancing in what has been called a provocative manner.

“Cuties” was directed by Maïmouna Doucouré and premiered at the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section of the Sundance Film Festival this year, going on to win the directing jury award.

Despite the film featuring 11-year-old children as its primary protagonists it is rated as TV MA meaning it is unsuitable for children.

Netflix have issued an apology for promoting the movie.
