A brand new, heavily armed Gardai branch was unveiled at Phoenix Park in Dublin earlier today.

Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald officially introduced the Armed Support Unit (ASU), a crack team of heavily armed Gardai specifically tasked with taken out gangland threats.

The military-clad, SWAT-style new unit have been issued with automatic weapons, tasers, ballistic shields, and other ordnance to deal with sieges and other critical incidents.

Admiring the new unit’s lethal paraphernalia, Ms. Fitzgerald said: “The creation of the new armed support unit was a key indication of Government support towards Gardai.

“This unit is very important for the people of Dublin – for their safety and for their security.

“We’re pleased the Government could support this, and we now have a dedicated unit that’s comparable to other cities.”
