New measures to tackle motorists driving under the influence of drugs – to be introduced before Christmas

The Department Of Transport have announced today that new measures targeted at testing motorists for drugs will be introduced by Christmas.

The new legislation will see an amendment to the Road Traffic Act that will allow Gardaí to carry out roadside tests if they suspect that motorists are driving under the influence of drugs.

It is understood drivers who are caught under the influence of heroin, cannabis or cocaine could face a fine of up to €5,000 or a maximum of six months in prison – or both.

The new Bill which was brought before the Dáil by the Transport Minister Shane Ross, will allow Gardaí to conduct tests in the same way in they carry out roadside tests for alcohol.
