New report finds that men are five times more likely than women to be problem gamblers




The Health Research Board (HRB) has published its first report on gambling in Ireland, finding that there are an estimated 12,000 problem gamblers in the country.

According to RTE, the group has found gambling addiction is a problem associated with economic deprivation and substance abuse. Problem gambling is more prevalent in men and they are five times more likely than women to be problem gamblers.

Unemployed Men aged between 25-34, living in more deprived areas of
Ireland with a primary or lower second level education and have a substance abuse history are at highest risk of problem gambling.

The report estimates there are 12,000 problem gamblers in the country
defined as those who gamble with negative consequences and a possible
loss of control.
