New Year, Same Pain: Petrol and Diesel Jump 5c Per Litre as Green Taxes Hammer Motorists Again

Ireland’s motorists rang in 2026 with a nasty shock at the pumps—petrol and diesel prices soaring 4-6c per litre from January 1st, courtesy of Government-mandated hikes in the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) and Better Energy Levy. Fuels for Ireland warns this adds €3 to a typical fill-up, pushing the five-year tax burden to €19 per 60-litre tank.

This follows October’s 2.5c carbon tax rise to €71 per tonne—now locked in for auto fuels—with home heating oil facing the same from May. No electricity credits this winter, despite suppliers hiking bills 10-15% in autumn, leaving average households facing €1,729 annually.

Rural families and commuters bear the brunt: higher fuel costs without viable alternatives, while elites push Net Zero from insulated offices. X erupts with fury over “tax upon tax,” as policy piles pain on workers already stretched by stagnant wages.

This isn’t green progress—it’s punishment. Scrap the escalators, cut levies, and prioritise affordable energy over ideology. Or watch Ireland’s heartland bleed dry while politicians pat themselves on the back.
