A member of the Doctors Without Borders organization who has just returned to New York after treating Ebola patients in South Africa has tested positive for the disease. This is the first case in New York City and America’s fourth.

Craig Spencer, 33, returned from Guinea a week ago and reportedly fell ill yesterday with a high fever and diarrhea. He was immediately transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan and is being treated in an isolation ward.

Spencer’s apartment has been cordoned off and all the people he has been in contact with have been traced. He has been able to provide detailed information about his movements since returning from Guinea.

New York city mayor Bill de Blasio has urged citizens ‘not to be alarmed’, and also said that city officials followed ‘clear and strong’ protocols in the handling of the case.
