The New Zealand government is set to penalize conversion therapy with a maximum of 5 years in prison for those who are caught trying to convert gay people to straight.
Conversion therapy seeks to change or eliminate a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity from gay to straight. The practice has been debated around the world with some converters claiming that they were once gay but are now straight having gone through the “conversion therapy” themselves.
The New Zealand government had promised to introduce a bill banning the practice within a year of being elected. Justice Minister Kris Faafoi published a new law proposed by the government to criminalize the practice.
Homosexuality was illegal in Ireland until 1993.
