The niece of a woman who was killed by a train in County Sligo yesterday has paid heartfelt tribute to her aunt.

There are three separate inquests into the death of Jessica McLaughlin, who was from the Cranmore area. The incident took place on a section of railway line near Ballisodar, reports RTE.

Rebecca McLaughlin was injured in the crash and is being treated in hospital.

In a social media post, she said she was devastated to lose her “beautiful aunty” Jess.

Ms McLaughlin described her as a sister and said she would always make sure her children knew how much their mother loved them.

There has been widespread shock around Sligo following yesterday’s tragedy.

The 40-year-old victim was walking along the railway line between Ballysodare and Colony when she was struck by a Dublin-bound train just after 3pm, reports RTE.

Train services between Dublin and Sligo were disrupted for several hours after the incident, but are running as normal today.

Efforts are on to ascertain the exact cause of the murder.

The 15:05 Sligo to Dublin train was traveling to Connolly Colony station when the incident happened near Knox Park.

Sinn Féin Councillor for Sligo-Drumcliffe, Thomas Healy, stated yesterday’s incident is a “tragedy for the whole of Sligo”, reports RTE.
