There haven’t been any cases of the mpox strain that’s raising concerns in Africa, according to Irish health officials, reports RTE.

The virus’s clade 1 subgroups, 1a and 1b, are to blame for Africa’s unheard-of surge in infections.

There has been one recorded case of clade Ib mpox in Sweden.

According to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, there are no known cases of clade 1a or 1b in Ireland.

It further stated that, with only six occurrences this year, the number of other mpox cases in this area is still rather low, reports RTE.

In contrast, there were 13 incidents in 2022 and 227 cases last year.

Clade 1 mpox is the cause of all of the cases in this location.

This is the strain that, according to the HPSC, started the global outbreak that mostly affected homosexual, bisexual, and other males who have sex with men in the beginning of 2022.

A public health emergency of worldwide concern was proclaimed earlier this month by World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus over the mpox outbreak in Africa, reports RTE.

The mpox virus is transferred by intimate contact, which includes coming into touch with an infected person’s skin rash.

In general, the community considers the probability of spread to be quite low.

According to the WHO, mpox is not the new Covid.

Against the backdrop of an upsurge in mpox cases in Ireland in 2022, the HSE administered a vaccination campaign to vulnerable risk groups, reports RTE.

The HSE claimed that this was one of the best-performing mpox vaccination programs in Europe, having administered over 11,000 doses of the vaccine to over 5,000 individuals who received all recommended shots.

According to health officials, Ireland has enough mpox vaccine on hand thanks to the EU procurement system to cover any potential demands over the next months, reports RTE.

The WHO has declared a public health emergency due to the appearance of a new clade of mpox in Africa, and the HSE is required to assess if a new vaccination campaign is necessary.

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee will provide advice on this matter, reports RTE.
