Brexit must be delayed allowing time for another referendum or at least a General Election to bring in a new UK government a retired senior EU official has declared.

The Express reports that former Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, has said that the UK’s split with the EU will have to be delayed as he does not foresee any agreement being reached any time soon.

These comments come just 24 hours before the crucial EU summit in which UK Prime Minister Theresa may will meet with her 27 EU counterparts to discuss Brexit negotiations progress, or lack thereof.

One of the most contentious issues is the Irish border which the EU has demanded must be treated as an external frontier unless the UK acquiesces to EU demands to remain inside the customs union.

EU Council President Donald Tusk has in the meantime said that a no-deal Brexit is now more likely than ever.
