No provisions set aside to cover water charges in 2017 as Varadkar claims the charges will return

The Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has revealed last night that the Government has not issued a provision in last weeks Budget to cover the cost of water charges in 2017 as they fully believe the charges will return next year.

The news which will surely anger every taxpayer in the country, comes after the Cabinet recently discussed the issue. It is understood that Fine Gael have purposely not set aside any additional funding to cover any potential shortfall vacated by the currently suspended charges.

It is believed that Mr kenny and his colleagues are fully determined to reintroduce the much hated charges once the nine month suspension ends in early 2017.

Meanwhile Mr Varadkar said: “In the absence of a decision to change the current ruling on water charges, the suspension will end and that’s why we haven’t made provision for the €120m, €130m or so that would be required to continue the suspension of water charges beyond the end of March.”
