No sh*t Sherlock – Labour’s Sean Sherlock says he will not contest next election

Seán Sherlock of Labour announced that he would not run in the upcoming general election, adding that he did it “with a heavy heart.”

First elected in 2007, the former Minister of State.

The Cork East TD’s hometown of Mallow was recently relocated into the nearby Cork North Central constituency following a review of constituencies.

The TD said in a statement that making the choice was challenging and that it had been an honour to represent the public for more than 20 years.

“I am deeply grateful to the people of Cork East for re-electing me in each subsequent election on both good days and bad for the Labour Party. I am proud to have continued his hard work serving the people of Cork East as a Councillor, TD and Minister of State.” he said, reports RTE.

“I worked on many local and national issues on their behalf most notably in ensuring the future, beyond any doubt, of Mallow General Hospital as well as ensuring the building of many new schools in my time as Minister of State in the Department of Education,” he added, reports RTE.

Mr. Sherlock said that the recent release of the Constituency Report by the Electoral Commission had an impact on his choice.

“The commission had a difficult job to do, but the impact on Mallow and Cork East has been profound. I always anticipated some change to our constituency, but the scale of that change is so extensive that it caused me to reflect on my own political future,” he said, reports RTE.
