No, they’ve had enough: Fianna Fail’s Chambers says there’ll be no one-off cost-of-living payment in the Budget

Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has stated that Budget 2026 will not include any once-off cost-of-living supports, reports RTE.

In an interview with RTÉ’s News at One, he explained that the Government is aiming to make decisions that are “sustainable with global uncertainty”.

“We will not be doing one-off payments, or one-off cost of living payments in this year’s Budget. We had a series of budgets in the last number of years, obviously through Covid, through the inflationary period where we responded,” he said, reports RTE.

“What we are saying though, in the context of Budget 2026, is that the decisions we take, we want to make sure they’re permanent, sustained and sustainable with the broader global uncertainty,” reports RTE.

Mr Chambers emphasized the need for the Government to proceed cautiously when making fiscal decisions, particularly given the current conditions in international trade.

While he declined to comment on individual policy actions, he did confirm that reducing child poverty would be a priority for the Government.

“It’s something that the Taoiseach wants to deliver change on in this year’s Budget. Minister [for Social Protection of Dara] Calleary will be working on that in the context of what will be available to Government,” reports RTE.
