Noonan: “Public sector workers will not be the only ones to benefit from next budget”

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan has claimed public-sector workers will not be the only sector to benefit from the next Budget later this year.

Mr Noonan’s announcement comes as the Minister for Public Expenditure Brendan Howlin is to hold discussions with union members this week, it is understood Mr Howlin will discuss the gradual reversal of pay cuts imposed during the recession.  Although leading Ministers have repeatedly issued a warning saying public sector staff will have to make a number of concessions on issues like productivity, as part of any pay increase.

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan made his comments whilst he was speaking in Brussels this afternoon. Mr Noonan believes private sector workers are also being given concessions.
“We had quite a significant levy on private-sector pensions and in the last budget, I took steps to remove that completely,” he said.
“There’ll be no levy on private-sector pensions from next year – so if part of the approach is the levy on public service pensions, then there’s an equivalence of approach with the private sector having their impositions removed first.”
