A Norwegian newspaper has apologised after announcing the death of Santa Claus at the age of 227.

The country’s largest newspaper, Aftenposten published an obituary on their website announcing the death of Santa Claus. It noted that Santa, born on 12 December, 1788, lived very long and active life. The notice added that a funeral would be held on 28 December at the “Chapel of the North Pole”.

“Aftenposten has strict guidelines for both the content and use of symbols in our obituaries. This ad is a violation of these and should never have been published,” said the newspaper’s editor Hakon Borud.

The obituary, which did not appear in the paper’s print edition, has since been removed from the website.
