The Mayo County Council has passed a motion requesting that employees cease working with the Department of Integration to house asylum seekers, reports Breaking News.

The “agreed strategy” for housing applicants for international protection is what the council members want to implement.

They ask for things like the halting of contracts that haven’t been started.

Councillor Peter Flynn of Fine Gael stated that they urge the Government to pay attention.

Mr Flynn told Newstalk: “We don’t know what the implications are, but it certainly will make the job of government that bit more difficult when it comes to Mayo. I would hope that it’s not just Mayo that the Government looks at, it’s the entire country. To figure out, how do we do this best?” reports Breaking News.

“The last thing we need as a country is social discord amongst our people, be they residents or be they refugees into our country,” he added, reports Breaking News.
