With hundreds of thousands of Irish workers on the social welfare PUP payment during lockdown and the Green Party pushing for another national holiday, Aontu leader Peadar Tóibín will table a new Bill this week to cut TD and Senator salaries by 25% each time Ireland goes into level 4 or level 5 lockdown.
According to the Oireachtas official website, the basic salary for a TD is €98,113 and a Senator is €69,474.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin gets paid a base salary of €98,113 with additional salaried allowance of €113,629.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar gets paid a base salary of €98,113 with €97,118 in additional salaried allowances.
According to the Aontu website, Mr Toibin says “The government has repeated the mantra that “we are all in this together”, but that is patently not true? There is very little sign of solidarity. Many within the political class in Ireland have lauded the government of New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern during Covid. Yet few have sought to follow her example of taking a pay cut during to prove solidarity with those most in need”.
