“Not long enough” – 25-yr-old thug gets jailed for 3 years for coercive control of his former girlfriend

A 25-yr-old thug has been jailed for three years for coercively controlling his ex-partner for a period of one-and-a-half years, which included a period when she was pregnant.

The woman told a court that the emotional abuse she experienced in a controlling relationship was like torture and caused her to lose her sense of self-worth, reports RTE.

Daniel Lynch, of Longdale Terrace, Ballymun, Dublin, pleaded guilty to compulsory restraint on dates between 19 September 2020 and 15 January 2022 at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

He also admitted to threatening to kill her in a WhatsApp voice message sent to her phone on January 15, 2022, reports RTE.

The court heard that by making this threat he was breaching a protective order issued last September and would be deemed guilty.

The woman said that he would verbally abuse her, telling her that no one loved her and expected her to miscarry their child.

Lynch abused alcohol, cocaine and other drugs and told the probation service that he could not remember the events clearly, but wrote a letter of apology to the victim.

Judge Martina Baxter said the abuse was continuous, intense and painful. This, Lynch said, demonstrated a blatant disregard for court orders and a desire for the victim to move on with her life.

The judge also said she was concerned about his “lack of empathy” and “breaching of the protection order”, reports RTE.

She sentenced Lynch to three and a half years in prison, with the last six months suspended.
