An off-duty bouncer who was brutally assaulted by two men he had previously barred from an Arklow hotel is now “no longer the same man” after being forced into early retirement due to the extent of his injuries, reports Breaking News.
One of the attackers, a Polish man, assaulted the victim near his place of work while he was off duty on Christmas Eve five years ago. He has now been sentenced to three years in prison for the incident.
Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court heard that the victim suffered serious facial trauma after being struck in the head with a bottle on Main Street in Arklow on December 24, 2019, reports Breaking News.
Mateusz Gorecki (31), of Ferrybank, Arklow, Co Wicklow, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Paul Lee, a charge under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997.
The accused, who is unemployed and has lived in Ireland for 14 years, also pleaded guilty to producing a weapon capable of causing serious harm on the same night, reports Breaking News.
Garda Emmet Furlong told the court that the victim had been sitting in his car outside the Royal Hotel on Main Street around 10pm on Christmas Eve, waiting to collect his partner from work.
Garda Furlong said Mr Lee saw Gorecki and another man with whom he had previous dealings as a hotel bouncer, reports Breaking News.
The garda explained that both men had earlier been barred by Mr Lee following a prior incident.
He said Mr Lee noticed the pair watching him from across the street. One appeared to be holding a bottle, and they repeatedly passed by his vehicle while glaring at him, reports Breaking News.
Prosecuting counsel James Kelly, BL, was told by Garda Furlong that Mr Lee exited his car to confront the two men.
Court footage showed Gorecki attempting to strike Mr Lee and then throwing a bottle at his head. Meanwhile, his associate punched and kicked the victim between Gorecki’s attacks, reports Breaking News.
The court heard that over the holiday period, Mr Lee had to attend three hospitals to treat his injuries.
Garda Furlong said Mr Lee sustained fractures to his skull, cheekbone, and eye socket and had to undergo surgery to have three metal plates implanted in his face.
When questioned by Mr Kelly, the garda said Gorecki showed little concern when arrested and denied throwing the bottle.
Despite clear video footage, the garda said the accused continued to maintain that the bottle did not strike Mr Lee, reports Breaking News.
The court was told that Gorecki had no criminal record at the time of the attack but had since been convicted of two public order offences related to public intoxication.
Under cross-examination from defence counsel Feargal Kavanagh SC, Garda Furlong said Gorecki caused the most damage but added that his co-accused—who received an 18-month sentence—had been “more of a leader,” reports Breaking News.
It was revealed that Gorecki had been drinking earlier that evening at a party in his sister’s house in Arklow.
In a victim impact statement read aloud by his son, Mr Lee (54) described himself as a once-proud and diligent worker, now forced into retirement due to an unprovoked act of violence, reports Breaking News.
He said the impact of the assault had been life-changing and far more than just physical pain.
Mr Lee described the emotional damage as “insidious and even more profound,” adding that he now lives with ongoing chronic symptoms, reports Breaking News.
The court was told he suffers from seizures, “insufferable headaches,” blurred vision, and post-traumatic stress.
“I do not recognise myself,” said Mr Lee, reports Breaking News.
He said his job had given him a sense of pride and structure, but now “no longer the same man,” his entire life has been altered.
Mr Lee stated his family has also endured hardship, as they witness someone they love become “someone unrecognisable.”
“The emotional toll is impossible to fully explain,” he added, reports Breaking News.
He said the attack was not just a short-term injury but “a permanent turning point in my life.”
Mr Lee called on Judge John Martin to impose a sentence that matched the seriousness of Gorecki’s actions, which he said had “taken the remaining years of my life,” reports Breaking News.
In mitigation, Mr Kavanagh said his client came from a disadvantaged background and had experienced personal tragedy.
He said Gorecki lost his father in childhood, his mother died last year, and a brother was killed in a motorcycle crash in Ireland some years ago.
The court heard that Gorecki expressed remorse and shame for what he called a “one-off incident,” reports Breaking News.
Mr Kavanagh said Gorecki was assessed as having a moderate risk of reoffending, which he attributed in part to his unemployment.
However, he added that the accused had recently been offered work at Arklow Golf Club, reports Breaking News.
He also said Gorecki had cut back on drinking and had not reoffended since 2023.
Although not blaming Mr Lee, Mr Kavanagh claimed the bouncer had gone “toe to toe” with the accused and had spoken directly into their faces, reports Breaking News.
Judge Martin sentenced Gorecki to three and a half years in prison for the assault, suspending the final six months for 12 months, with conditions including supervision by the Probation Service for two years and a requirement to abstain from alcohol.
The judge said the accused had shown only limited acceptance of responsibility for what he described as “quick and drink-fuelled” violence that had “lasting and very significant” consequences, reports Breaking News.
He noted the gravity of Mr Lee’s injuries and said Gorecki was responsible for delivering “the first and last blow.”
Judge Martin also pointed out that Gorecki only pleaded guilty after a jury was empanelled and had made no concrete efforts to show remorse or make restitution.
He concluded by extending his best wishes to Mr Lee and expressing hope that the resolution of the case would provide him with some sense of closure, reports Breaking News.
