The Office of Public Works has said that damage at many of the country’s historic sites are a “real, pressing and substantial problem”, when discussing the measures that need to be taken to repair or protect the ancient sites.

According to RTE, there have been 51 separate incidents at sites last year.  Some of the sites were damaged several times.  The Gardai have been called out several times with some of the country’s major historic sites being attached.

One of the more recent attacks included vandalism to the ancient standing stone on the Hill of Tara in County Meath, the “Lia Fail”.  The word “fake” was painted onto the stones which is thought to be 5000 years old.   In other incidents, masonry was stolen at Castle Roche in County Louth and two fairy plaques and benches were burnt at Castletown House in Celbridge.

The various acts of vandalism have resulted in CCTV cameras being erected, while a number of the sites have required costly repairs.
