Almost one in two think Ryan Tubridy should return to the air to present his radio show, RTE, according to a new poll, reports The Mirror.

However, 37% of those polled said they did not believe RTÉ should allow him to resume his job as a radio presenter.

The Irish Mail on Sunday/Amarache survey also found that around 16% said they “don’t know” if they should be allowed to return.

However, the poll also revealed that most people blamed RTE’s management for the hidden payments scandal after former Late Show host and his agent Noel Kelly appeared before the Ethics Commission.

And while the survey results show that the presenter has been hit with controversy, only 8% believe that he is mainly responsible for the failure.

Overall, 28% believe that confidence in RTE can be restored, while 13% say they “don’t know”, reports The Mirror.

The 59% who do not believe trust can be restored is down from 72% who said the same thing when asked the same question in an earlier press poll days after the scandal broke.

During the same poll, around a third said they were now “less likely” to see Mr Tubridy on radio or television as a result of the scandal, a finding largely reflected in the current survey, reports The Mirror.

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of those surveyed previously said they thought TV licensing should no longer be mandatory. It comes as Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has signaled a complete overhaul of RTÉ funding during the lifetime of the current government.
