OPINION: If the Government was as concerned about protecting our children as they are about flying the tricolour, our kids would be a lot safer

The arrest of an African asylum seeker in his 30s for the alleged rape of a 10-year-old Irish girl at Citywest Hotel on Monday exposes a national failure. The child, under Tusla care, was assaulted on the grounds of the migrant centre where the suspect resided. He entered Ireland six years ago, failed his asylum claim in 2024, and ignored a March 2025 deportation order. Protests followed immediately outside the hotel.

The following night, six people were arrested after a standoff on the nearby N7 Business Park – barricades, offensive weapons, gardaí with shields, and a helicopter overhead. This incident, amid a 15% rise in south Dublin public order calls this year, left families disrupted and children terrified by sirens until 10pm.

Contrast this urgency with Dáil time on the Irish tricolour: a three-hour debate on 15 September 2025 for half-mast displays at Leinster House; Tallaght Council’s 90-minute session on 10 October for local centre flags. These consumed 240 parliamentary minutes in six weeks, per Hansard and council minutes.

Dublin’s housing list stands at 12,000; Tusla placements are underfunded; deportation orders unenforced. The same energy spent on flags could enforce 5,000 deportations, hire 500 child protection officers, and secure safe housing for vulnerable kids.

The tricolour represents equality and protection. Prioritising child safety over symbolic debates would prevent tragedies like this rape and nightly standoffs. Until then, Irish children pay the price for misplaced priorities.
