Opinion: Numbers are down, the rest of the world is reopening – it’s time to lift Ireland’s lockdown

Ireland’s stringent lockdown measures are now amongst the strictest in the world as many other countries have lifted their lockdown measures much quicker than we are.

Maybe it’s a case of the Taosieach Leo Varadkar being told what he can and can’t do from Germany, but either way, Italy, France and Spain are now weeks ahead of Ireland in terms of easing lockdown, but yet had a far worse outbreak of coronavirus than Ireland had.

The Irish economy is taking a major hit from these lockdown measures. Those who are advocating for a lengthy easing are predominantly either working directly for the government or are in the civil or public service, whose wages will remain largely untouched.

The rest of the workers need the economy back A-SAP. There was no peak in terms of cases, there was no mass outbreak, the curve is now well controlled at the very least.

What’s not controlled is the mass damage being done to the economy and the mass damage being done to people who can’t get out and about, visit their family and friends properly and get on with life.

The time has come to lift Ireland’s lockdown and not wait any longer.
