Organ donation system set for change under new opt out system




The way organ donations are handled in Ireland are soon set to change as the Government look set to introduce a new legislation that will see an opt out system.

Under the new legislation which is entitled the Human Tissue Bill, organ donation will will be presumed unless stated otherwise in circumstances when a person dies and organ donation is viable.

It is expected that the new legislation which will replace the current opt in system will be moved through the Dail in the coming weeks ahead.

However the new changes will also a next of kin being notified about any possible organ donation if the deceased has not already opted out.

It is hoped that the new system will see more organ donations that could potentially save hundreds more lives.
